A 13-Year Project That Was Anything but Simple

The brief: what this project needed to show

Some projects go off without a hitch. This wasn’t one of them. Photographing my own daughter’s 13th birthday adventure turned out to be one of the most chaotic, exhausting, and downright brilliant experiences I’ve had behind the camera. Between battling an electric stove at Marion Holiday Park , getting completely lost in the Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens , and enduring a sleepover that didn’t wind down until 2 AM — this weekend was a perfect mix of family chaos and unforgettable memories. If you’re here for the highlights: golden hour shots at Mount Lofty Summit , an emergency McDonald’s run, and a lot of noise. But if you want the full story of this candid family photography adventure, keep reading.

Day One — Marion Holiday Park, Hangry Teens, and the Stove from Hell

The setting: context, people and place

Big birthdays deserve more than phone snaps. Whether it’s a wild celebration at Marion Holiday Park or a casual family session in the Adelaide Hills, I’m up for it. If you want photos that capture the moment without forced smiles, you’re in the right place.

The approach: practical coverage, clean delivery

We kicked things off at Marion Holiday Park , where the girls took over the pool in about five minutes flat. Meanwhile, I took on the role of head chef — a mistake I won’t make twice. Now, I’m no stranger to cooking, but this electric stove pushed me to my limits. After a battle of wills, a failed boiling attempt, and a pack of hungry teenagers circling the kitchen, I threw in the towel and made a tactical retreat to McDonald’s. Sometimes, birthday photography turns into survival mode.

Capturing real interactions

The priority was genuine conversation and connection. Handshakes, introductions, reactions, and those small in-between moments that actually define corporate relationships.

This is the core of effective corporate event photography, especially when the images are going to be reused in business contexts.

Showing where the event happened

This is what turns a “luncheon gallery” into a corporate case study.

Shooting with long-term use in mind

The final image set was designed to work across:

  • Internal communications

  • Business development material

  • Websites and presentations

  • Social media posts that don’t feel disposable

This forward planning also makes it easier to integrate photography with future content, including videography in Adelaide if needed down the line.

Why this matters for future clients

With everyone fed, we set off for Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens , thinking it’d be the perfect backdrop for some relaxed lifestyle photography . Instead, it turned into a two-hour navigation disaster — though the girls found my lack of direction hilarious. We finally found the spot — perfect light, kangaroos in the background — right as they announced closing time. We managed about 30 seconds of photos before being kicked out. It wasn’t the planned teenage birthday photoshoot , but it was classic family chaos.
