The brief: what this project needed to show
From the hum of machinery to the precision of the process — industrial photography is all about capturing real work in action. This shoot with Boortmalt , one of the largest malt producers in the world, gave us a chance to showcase their people, production, and powerhouse operation right here in South Australia. The brief should identify the production stages, machinery, staff roles and facility views that explain the operation. Boortmalt's Adelaide project focused on people, production and the scale of a working malt facility. It was not a generic factory tour, so the required process and brand story needed to be named first.
Plan safe vantage points around the live process and agree on the few moments that need coordination. The Boortmalt brief centred on authentic work in action, so the photographer needs site induction, an authorised escort where required, and clear rules about where equipment and staff can be approached without interrupting production.
Include the roles that make the production story understandable, not random staff placed beside machinery. Ask the site team to identify operators, supervisors or specialists who can be photographed safely during real tasks. Confirm consent, PPE and any uniform or branding requirements before the camera enters the production area.
Provide induction requirements, PPE, exclusion zones, hygiene rules, moving-equipment risks, emergency contacts and areas where photography is prohibited. Malt production is an operating industrial environment, so safety controls determine the available angles and timing. They must be part of the brief, not improvised after arriving on site.

Recruitment may need recognisable roles and workplace culture, while marketing may need cleaner scale, process and facility photographs.
